Howdy, Alex/snuffkin/et. al.! I'm a newbie and have 2 possible applications for phase and wanted to get opinions/feedback on whether Phase would be a good fit before installing...

(1) MUTLI-USER ENVIRONMENT
I run an e-mail/web server (apache, php, mysql) that has about 200-300 users... most are not super-active. Woud Phase be a good choice as CMS for the general server FAQ, news, forums, etc. and would there be any serious conflict/security issues if various users stared downloading and installing Phase in their various sites as well?

(2) MAC
The other possible use would be for a department website on a standalone server, Mac OS X (apache, php, mysql). Are there any known "Mac" issues?

Thanxalot!

Just throwing in my bit before the more "authoritative" sources answer (and obviously correct me if I am wrong). :) ;)

Phase does not contain any "portal" or community bits n bobs (forum, etc). But, it doesn't mean you couldn't install some other software to use as a forum along-side Phase (like, phpBB, Phorum, etc).

Unless you're looking for a more "all-in-one-box" kind of thing, then I think you should look at a something like Mambo (contains a forum, etc). Mind you, I found Mambo to be kind of overwhelming and restrictive in some things, a real annoyance for me personally. But some people really like it.

Hi, Sunshine! Actually, on the server I'm using phpBB already and I knew Phase includes or easily integrates it in... that's 1 of the things that attracted my attention to Phase. I wanted to be able to easily integrate the existing forums and not have to port them (it seemed like a scary task to attempt). I am concurrently investigating Mambo, too... in fact, that was the 1st one I got but I haven't jumped into it yet. Plus, I thought Phase would be easier and more flexible than Mambo... but again, I have not yet jumped in so could be mistaken.

Thanx for the info so far!

As far as "integrating" a forum, that's done right here on the Phase site.

I do know that some "integration" options won't work, or will be hard to do -- like having a Phase page "membership-protected" by phpBB, for example.

But if all you want to do for integration is a similar look or even a login box across the site, that is do-able.

Sunshine pretty much sums up the forum issue. The Phase site itself isn't really integrated with phpBB except for look and feel. For the FAQ and news sections, Phase would do fine :)

Multi-user environment security: This really depends on the setup of the server. The Phase site is hosted on a machine with multiple sites on it, and they do not conflict in any way. The different installs of Phase I have running here don't 'see' each other at all. However, depending on the setup of the server, you may need to disable the file manager functions (easily done by setting roles or through a simple workaround). But, I'd really need some more info on the setup before I can comment on this.

Mac OSX: Phase should work on any php installation. I know that there were some issues on IIS related to $_SERVER['document_root'] et al, but those have been addressed in the current version. On Apache it should run fine, regardless of OS. However, I've not tested Phase running on OSX (I don't have a Mac), so I can't garuantee it'll work 'out of the box'. Best way is to download and install it (installation is easy ;) ) and se if it works. I'd love to know if it works on Mac!

Was just cruising the forums and noticed this thread...

Etomite works perfectly on my personal development machine (I'm currently using a G4 Powerbook running OSX 10.3.5, Apache 2.0.48, PHP 4.3.4 and MySQL 4.0.20).

There seems to be a problem using Etomite's manager with Safari but I think it's because of Safari's javascript support. Works fine with Firefox.

:eto: hasn't caused any issues with either of my Mac Xserves. The sites are in development still but OS X is perfectly fine with Etomite.

 - my first indicator of how old this thread was was when I saw all the references to "Phase" - even from Alex...
