Hi,

I am looking for a webhoster to host this site I am developing. I found one that offers 200Mb, now I would like to know how big this is for etomite? Is this a website e.g. with 3 or 4 pages and just a few images? How can I make a good decision?

Depends on what you mean by a few images - images can take up much more space than text, depending on the size you store them at. (One art site I know of, not yet live, is considering allowing 20Mb per image, but this is unusual.)

To give you an idea the Rogue Gene Collective web site is currently a little under 100MB in size, so 200MB should allow for a reasonablt substantial site!

Hi Mike,
Thank you, I have seen enough to make a decision!

For 3-4 pages including a few images, you could probably do with 5MB.
But such a little webspace is difficult to get these days, even for mail-only-accounts.
We've got 50MB and more than 90% of it is taken up by stuff from the pre-etomite-site which I still have to delete.

How big is 200Mb?

---

About three inches wide and two inches thick :-)
It is hard to tell.

In that case the answer is time-dependant as I can remember large black square 3.5" (and even larger) diskettes that could only contain about one-third of a MB. Imagine 600 of those :P

Even though you have already made your decision I couldn't help adding this.

A Mb is 1024kb. This page (at time of writing) is 7.8kb, let us say 8kb. So a Megabyte is about 120 pages like this one. 200Mb is about 24,000 pages like this one. A pretty big site you would imagine.

The etomite installation is 6.11Mb.

A photo I took recently was nearly 20Mb. Your 200Mb is about ten of these. Not very much at all.

In terms of web space, 200Mb is probably enough for most sites.

Paul

PS Have they limited the size of your database? Fasthosts charge £25.00 for a database! What a rip off! (At least they did when I hosted a site with them in jan/feb this year.

Edit: I remember the ZX81, (1983?) it was stunning when I first saw it. That had a massive 1k of memory.

In todays world of inexpensive hosting the amount of storage space is secondary... The amount of "bandwidth" is usually of far greater concern... If even a small page of markup is rendered and served up thousands or millions of times in a given month then the apportioned bandwidth for that domain might be expended and the account suspended until the next monthly cycle begins... Determining required storage space and bandwidth requires a bit of fuzzy math in order to come up with the correct hosting plan for estimated needs...
