Would it be possible to retain the original resolution of a picture when uploaded so that there is a link to the full resolution picture. This would mean that there would be three copies of the picture, the thumbnail, web size resolution and a full resolution.
I have searched the wish list and documentation and can't find anything like this, I am sorry it is already exists and I have missed it.

No, it doesn't already exist.
It might not sound like a lot of work to add, but unfortunately it is. It would need redesign and changes to etogal both for admin and possibly display, and to the other main associated snippets (EtoGalThumb and EtoGalGallery). The only snippet not affected would be EtoGalSearch.
I'll keep it in mind next time I do a major update, but that won't be for a while yet. I'm not doing any major changes until I know what's needed for compatibility with the next major etomite release (or until I need something for one of the sites I manage).
