I'm not sure if I am right here but, if an etomite upgrade is performed, the permissions of the folders revert to 755 (well they do on my dodgee free host).

I've been upgrading quite a few Etomite powered sites using the exact same steps outlined in the README and installer and all sites have upgraded without issues... The only mistakes I've made have been in forgetting to assure that all of the permissions have been updated... You see, I'm also guilty of not following my own instructions explicitly - and some of those mistakes are what prompted me to create the README file in the first place...

This is covered in the documentation, but when you click on the "New Installation" documentation tab,

Directory and file permissions
Before you start to install Etomite, there are a few file and directory permissions that need to be set.

Use your FTP client or a control panel to ensure the following are all writable by PHP (chmod 777):

path_to_etomite/manager/includes/config.inc.php
path_to_etomite/assets/cache (and all files within this directory)
path_to_etomite/assets/images
path_to_etomite/assets/export
The majority of installation problems are caused by not setting these permissions correctly, and particularly by forgetting the files in the assets/cache directory.

but the link I went for (and I guess most would) is the "Upgrading" page where permissions are not mentioned.

Also, on closer inspection, the README file does not mention permissions either. Other than to mention for New Installations to read the Eto Documentation.

And the same goes for the Installation file in the download package...

The fact that you are reading these instructions indicates that you have already copied the new files onto your server.
Once the above steps have been completed (run the dbs_script) login to your Etomite manager verify and save your Etomite configuration, and perform a Clear site cache from the Etomite Main Menu. After these steps have been completed you should have a fully function Etomite 0.6.1.4 installation.

Therefore, I would think it could save some headaches to include a mention in the "upgrading" page of the documentation (at minimum) to remind that the permissions need to be checked after uploading and before installing. (unless my assumption is incorrect).

I guess it might be a bit much to assume that people would actually remember that the permissions need to be confirmed... That's why we ask for people to do test installs and upgrades before every release... Unfortunately, the few people we asked were too busy to do those tests so Dean and I were the main testers - and we know what needs to be done from memory... And as soon as we see an error we know what we forgot to do... So, yes, I agree that there might be merit for some tweaking of the installation/upgrade documentation...
