I've been forced onto a new machine (old one died suddenly). Unfortunately it's got Vista (Home Basic) on it.

I wasn't having any of the captcha problems that I've (now) noticed around these forums, even tho' I'm running Eto 0.614, but now I can't get them to work at all, I have put in the changes mentioned in the forums here.

In the process I've upgraded to Apache 2.2.6 and php 5.2.5, but I don't *really* think they're the problem.
I notice the php.ini file no longer contains a reference to GD, which I would imagine is the problem. However, when I put that in I get an error in the php error log complaining that it couldn't start the gd module, saying that the module API's don't match and they need to.

Presumably I'm not the only one with this problem? Is there a new GD module for (bl**dy) Vista? Or... errr... what?

Any ideas?

Just turning it off isn't going to help since I've coded captcha into my front end stuff...

Regards
Mark

Is it localhost wamp package?

Or are you accessing it on a shared server?

Have you tried FF?

Is it localhost wamp package?

Local machine, WAMP, as stated <Later, errr, ok, "implied">, accessing it FireFox, if I'm guessing "FF" correctly.

Ok, I don't know if it still applies, but I know that you used to have to copy the GD library into the windows directory after you enabled it, but like I say, I don't know as I'm a Mac guy :D

General opinion on the php fora seems to be that that's not necessary.

Not only do I get no kick from champagne, but I also get no error message from php.
The only indication I can see suggesting there's something wrong is in the Apache access log is says

127.0.0.1 - - [20/Jan/2008:11:33:39 +0000] "GET /newwfma/manager/includes/captchaCode.php?dummy=31653&sessid=6afmkcmvlfj7ehb22g9gb3ahr7&realm=IN_ETOMITE_PARSER HTTP/1.1" 500 -

Any thoughts?

Yup, I'd got as far as it being a server error, but don't know why.
Why d'you suggest the security stuff?

Well with the stuff being in the path that was called, and it throwing a 500 error.
It's probably wrong, but worth a shot.

Also, try another package; what about XAMPP?

So what might I look for? Or change?

Hmmm, seems a bit drastic to fix something that really should "just work". Not something I either have the time for, or feel justified in stopping doing other things for. :(
I'm assuming it's drastic. What is it?

You're on your own as far as using a WAMP bundle when the Windows version is Vista... I don't know of anyone running such a beast... Talk about being a glutton for punishment - you deserve credit for just thinking that it might work... Better you than me... Become good friends with Google as I just tried a search for "vista wamp" and it appears that you aren't the only person having problems... My gut feeling is telling me that most problems are due to how Vista is such a control freak...

Another source of help might be the WAMP support forums...

It's what I've got (now) :(
Hopefully I can get an old m/c running Linux & a stable LAMP setup.

Yeah, well it's wimpering in the corner 'cos I've turned most of it's cr*p off, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if you're right.

Hah! Hadn't even occurred to me there would be such things, daft really. Ok, I'll have a look.
Ta.

Well, I don't have a XAMP or WAMP setup, 'cos I installed the packages myself separately.

And now it works!
I turned out I hadn't loaded the gd extension in the php.ini file.

However, I had done this at some point, and it hadn't worked, so something's changed, but I don't know what. :(

Mark

XAMP/WAMP bundles often change core components of Apache; so doing it all yourself means that you've got an unmodified clean version, optimized for your computer (rather than someone else's).

It's relatively easy to setup - there are many guides floating around the internet.

Yes. Unfortunately what a lot of them seem to say is "under no account use the php Windoze installer version", which of course is what I did <_<

Hmm, weird stuff.

I've had my own troubles with Vista myself.

Yep, I worked with Vista :Silly:

I've downgraded the system in the end back to XP pro.

Maybe this is also an option for you ?

I just hate Vista, I can't even do general stuff without crippling the security system.
Even a change in your HOST file isn't allowed

I went back to XP pro, an no problems at all

I have crippled the security system, it deserves it, it's pants!

So many little niggles with it, you're right, XP seems like a good option. I haven't got a install version to hand, and I don't want the hassle re-installing again.

I think I've mostly bludgeoned Vista into a quivering wreck in the corner so that it doesn't interfere. Many more of these though...

Check out the "I can't copy too many files" bug with Vista! Hah! Grrrrrr.
