While updating a website this message appears after attempting to save any page:

Cannot open file (../assets/cache/etomiteCache.idx)

Then, the pages that were saved are not available online. What happened? How can I fix it?

Log into the manager, then delete the file.
Then press the site cache refresh link.

I tried deleting the document, and refreshing the page, nothing happened.

The refresh page then says:

0 documents were published.
0 documents were unpublished.
Cannot open file (../assets/cache/etomiteCache.idx)

Anything else I can do?

Try creating a blank file called etomiteCache.idx (via FTP), and then chmod it 777.

No, I can make changes to the specific pages simply by keeping the alias name the same. If i try to change the alias name, the page will be an error and reroute to the home page. So, I fixed what i wanted to fix, but the opeating etomite homepage will not show the reflections in the parent tree until I log out and then back in.

How do I go about creating a new file via FTP? and what does 'chmod it 777' mean?

Also, could this be responsible for very slow browsing?

OK one thing at a time.

If you change a document alias, and you want to see it in the browser you have to reload your homepage, becausse the document menu has to be reloaded to set the new URL to the edited page.
IF you are one the page you've just renamed a reload will always result in an error because the page alias doesn't exist anymore.

Is this clear to you now ?

What Dean was trying to tell you is accessin the site with an FTP program so you can see the file structure on your server, like a windows folder.
The CHMOD 777 command is a method to change the filerights of a file or folder.
The cache file has to be 777 and means it has full read/write access, so the cache can be updated.

But before its getting to technical:

Before we can give you better advice I would like to know the folowing:
What is the version of Etomite:
PHP version:
MySql version:
webServertype Appache/IIS:

We no longer support Etomite 0.6 Heliades... That release is over 3 years old... Please upgrade...
