I've decided I'd like to once again set up a local web server for testing. I'm using Windows XP at present, though may install a test Windows 7 environment. I'd be grateful for any advice on the the best packaged WAMP environment around at present. (I don't want to use PHP 4.x or MySQL 4.x!)

Secondly, I'm interested in {less} as it purports to get rid of some silly omissions from CSS and extends it usefully in other ways. It certainly looks to require a more readable source. I think it needs ruby and rails, which possibly precludes it from being used in a Windows environment ... unless someone knows what I need to do it?

thanks for any advice ...

WampServer is a no-brainer if you want to host your own Etomite site... Download, make a minor configuration modification, install Etomite, and you're done... It also works great with DtDNS dynamic IP updaters... I don't think it works with Ruby On Rails but I haven't investigated it either...

Thanks Ralph, looks like WampServer's what I want ... DtDNS isn't necessary though as it will live solely on my home network, which has a maximum of three PCs and a router! I want it purely for development/test so I don't mess up the sites that face the world (they're kindly managed by 'slicedapple' so I don't have to worry about them!)
Ruby, rails and {less} is a completely separate wishlist (actually {less} is all I want, it just seems to require a whole load of infrastructure that shouldn't really be necessary for text processing, and isn't Windows friendly)!

A PHP {less} implementation is now available at http://leafo.net/lessphp/ so I don't need ruby anymore :)

I'll be rewriting my original website efikim as a sales outlet for my colour photography, and will try out {less} on the CSS for that. The efikim website has been a 'why do I keep this going?' site since I created www.mikefinley.co.uk - maybe I now have a use for it. (It'll actually be a frontend for my work on redbubble, which is also in the process of being reorganised to hold just my colour photography)

Not sure how much more I could do with Less, but it looks interesting...

for me it would have been worth it with the last site I put together just for the ability to change colours in one place!
