Yes, in an effort to push PHP towards OOP standards the practice is being encouraged... However, it is highly doubtful that the bog standard mysql functions will truly become obsolete in the foreseeable future... You can expect them to remain fully functional on through PHP 6, and perhaps beyond considering how they are already included in PHP 6 and will only be dropped at a major release breakpoint... There are currently far too many software packages out there that utilize mysql functions to upset the applecart... I'm not entirely convinced that their inclusion will ever be dropped... Only time will tell...
