I visit the IPS site daily mostly to get informed about security updates so from what I read there this came as no suprice at me.

As one person said "This is the end of the high quality free forum software era"...

I guess people will have to move to other free forum solutions like I have as I suspected that this could happen...

What does that mean for Etomite? Is Alex going to buy a licence?

From what I understand, if you were fortunate enough to download 2 final before this was announced then you may continue to use that. However, be aware that when it comes to upgrading it in the future, then you'll be lucked-out.

We licensed ours during the special offer. Well, technically, a client did in return for a skin we are designing for them.

As someone posted on our own forum, I think a more amicable solution would have been to keep a "lite" version.

IPS want to appear professional, I believe, and want to seem like vBulletin. (I can't stand vBulletin myself.)

Anyway, even this board is under a 'trial' licence, their definition of 'trial' is VERY loose, they just say 'when you decide you want to use it permanently get a licence', but they don't specify any maximum usage time, etc... So a lot of people used it without giving IPS a penny. <_<

I cant stand vBulletin - the way they handle things that is.
vB staff is great, software even better, but yoou need to pay.

There IS still phpbb. Annd that IS pretty good

Be gone with that evil talk of phpBB.

As for vBulletin, it's without a doubt, the best of them all at the moment. Oh for "Similar Topics" functionality in IPB. When I visit sitepoint.com, I can't tell you how handy that feature is.
